How do I get a library card?

Bring your photo ID and ask to fill out a library card application.  If your ID does not list your current address, we also need to see proof of current address, such as a lease, utility bill, or insurance card.

How old does my child have to be to get a library card?

Parents may register their children for a card at any age, however, we do require that a parent/guardian have a library card in good standing before issuing a card to a minor.

Can I check out without my library card?

We encourage you to have your library card with you in order to check out.  If you don't have your card on you, we can look you up with your photo ID, or by name.  You may be asked to confirm your address or date of birth to verify your identity.  Lost cards can be replaced for $1.

Can I check out with someone else's library card?

If a friend or family member has asked you to pick up items on their behalf, they must give you their card to bring to the library, or contact the library in advance of your visit.  We are unable to look up other people's account info for you.

What if I am unable to get to the library?

You might be eligible for our Homebound Delivery Service, which is the weekly delivery of library materials to patrons who are unable to come to the library temporarily (due to illness, accident or condition) or permanently (due to advanced age, disability or other mobility problems). This service is currently available only to residents within the Village of New Glarus. If you live outside the village limits and are interested, let us know in case we are able to expand the service in the future.

To get started, please read our homebound services policy and user guide, and then fill out and return our application. Librarians are happy to answer questions or to help you fill out an application over the phone (608-527-2003).

Can I reserve a meeting room or a private study room?

The New Glarus Public Library does not have private spaces available for meetings, tutoring, etc.  If you are interested in reserving the Village Hall Community Room for an event, you must contact the clerk's office at 527-3677.  Regular room rental fees will apply.

Can I use the internet at the library?

Of course!  We have three public access computers with internet access.  You will be required to log on with your library card number and PIN.

Children ages 8 and older may use the internet computers once a parent has signed an internet acceptable use agreement.

We also have free WiFi that can be accessed by any laptop, tablet, or smart phone - no password required.

Can I become a library volunteer?

The New Glarus Public Library occasionally has volunteer opportunities for interested community members.  Examples of volunteer projects include:

  • Helping with Summer Reading events
  • Presenting workshops in connection with ongoing programs
  • Assisting with the annual book sale

If you would be interested in volunteering at the library, please read our volunteer policy, and then print, complete, and return the Volunteer Application and Background Check Form (links are on the sidebar to the right).  Your application will be kept on file, and library staff will contact you if we have a project we feel you would be suited for.

How do you decide what materials to purchase for the library?

Purchasing decisions are made based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, bestseller lists, book reviews, patron interest, and local/regional significance.  For a complete explanation of our collection development process, please see the documents listed below.

Do you accept book donations?

We gladly accept donations of gently used books, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs throughout the year, with the understanding that these items will be offered for sale at our annual Friends of the Library book sale (held the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend).  We are unable to accept textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines, and items with water/mildew damage.  We are happy to provide you with documentation of your donation for tax purposes.
